Demonstrators opposed to the controversial gas extraction method gathered in Piccadilly Gardens from 12pm before marching to Cathedral Gardens at 2pm.

Speakers included members of the protest camp at Barton Moss, where energy firm IGas is carrying out test drilling to explore potential shale gas reserves beneath the green belt site in Irlam, Salford.

Campaign groups and unions including Friends of the Earth, the Green Party, Manchester People’s Assembly and the Campaign Against Climate Change were also represented at the demo.
